Maryland State Police
The Maryland State Police were formed in 1921 and its sole purpose was to enforce the motor vehicle laws of the state. Finally, in 1935, by an act of the State Legislature, the Maryland State Police became a separate branch of the state government. In addition to enforcing the motor vehicle laws, they were now also empowered to begin criminal enforcement and preserving the peace. Officially, on June 2nd, 1935, the Maryland State Police were born and the first class of 50 Troopers were sworn in under Gov. Harry Nice. Today, there are approximately 2,000 Troopers working out of 23 barracks across the state of Maryland.
